Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Hugo Odhner in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton has received Odhner’s letter of Dec. 5th. Pendleton thinks it is quite in order for Odhner to receive the offerings from the children’s service. He states, “It is my belief . . . that all free-will offerings should go to the priest, regardless of any other financial arrangement which he may have with his Society.” In Bryn Athyn, the College department is larger than ever this year, although they have been having issues with academic performance. Two young men have been asked not to return for the second term, and several others have been placed on probation. Pendleton comments, “Bryn Athyn is an education rather than a social centre. These young men seemed to think otherwise. We shall see.” Pendleton congratulates Odhner and his wife on the birth of their son. Pendleton was also glad to hear that Odhner has been adjusting to the South African environment. He writes, “My own cure for colds and all the ills of changes of temperature is summer underwear all the year round. I.e., let the free air get to the pores at all seasons. It works like a charm.” Pendleton reports that Mr. Alden is ill and has gone to Bermuda for his health. Pendleton will see what can be done about the books in Alden’s absence. Names mentioned: George (DeCharms), Constance (Waelchli Odhner), Mr. Alden, Leonard (Gyllenhaal)
