Letter from N.D. Pendleton's wife to Rev. Carl Theophilus Odhner
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton's wife, Beatrice Walton Childs Pendleton, to Rev. Carl Theophilus Odhner. No Date. “Your kind and appreciative letter reached me at a time when kindness and appreciation meant more than ordinarily much- i.e. the midst of a chicken-pox epidemic, when the effort to be patient and mild with three disfigured victims groaning and quarrelling and generally getting it out of their systems, had worn me quite thin and limp. I am so glad the letter pleased you. I was half afraid you might find it frivolous and unbecoming. I dreamed one night that you sent it back with the remark that “it was entirely unsuited for the Life,” and much more to the same effect. I wish, indeed, that I might write. I love it so. Perhaps, someday in the evening of life, when my strenuous part is done, and I have something worthwhile to give, the chance may come. Meanwhile under your encouragement I feel hopeful. Perhaps I can help sometimes? Meanwhile, I am gratefully and appreciatively yours, Beatrice Childs Pendleton. P.S. I like my title better than the one suggested. It is brief and descriptive, but if you don’t approve, please use your own judgement. P.S. No. II D. says there is something left out or changed on page 4, in paragraph 4, beginning “The statement of doctrine etc.” N.B. After struggling with it ourselves we decided the easiest way was to leave it all out.”
