Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Carl Theophilus Odhner
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Carl Theophilus Odhner. Date: July 6th, no year. Pendleton discusses Swedenborg’s writings on the metaphysics of the soul as they relate to his criticism of Odhner’s paper. He writes, “You will recall that on the occasion of the reading of your first paper I said that Swedenborg had stated that the “pure simple was neither Infinite nor finite but an indefinite eus(?)” and that you challenged me to show the statement. Unfortunately I could not lay my hand on the place while in Bryn Athyn. However it will be found in The Infinite II Chapter, under the caption “Is the soul a pure simple.” The precise statement reads as follows, “And if in its very essence there be nothing of the third, nothing of modification(?), then it must be simple which is neither Infinite nor finite.”
