Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Richard Morse, 1925-11-10
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Richard Morse in Sydney, Australia. Pendleton advises Morse on General Church customs relating to conducting services in the absence of an ordained minister. He writes, “It has been our custom for many years standing to have some steady minded layman lead in worship in case the minister for any reason cannot serve. The use in question is regarded as more important than the order. Some formal distinctions, however, may well be made. One we have always, observed, namely, the priest raises his hands and blesses the people. The layman should fold his hands in front of him and ask for a blessing upon “us all.” Pendleton notes with interest Morse’s communication with Mr. Teed and remarks that he knows little of him personally. Pendleton has just returned from an episcopal trip out west which included a stop in Denver, CO, where he met with young minister Henry Heinrichs. The Denver Society has a long and troubled history, but Pendleton hopes it will prosper under Heinrichs’ leadership. Pendleton is now beginning preparations for both the February ministers’ meetings in Bryn Athyn and the June General Assembly in Kitchener. Names mentioned: Mr. (Richard Hooper) Teed, Mr. Henry Heinrichs
