Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Richard H. Keep, 1917-08-25
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Richard H. Keep in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton has received Keep’s letter of August 19th. Pendleton regrets to report that although the Consistory was sympathetic towards Keep personally, they are not able to offer him employment as there are no open positions at this time. In addition, the Consistory did not think it advisable to reopen the question of Keep’s standing as a minister within the Church; Pendleton writes, “. . . you know the law revealed that a minister may represent the Lord unless this representation be broken by scandal. It must be clear to you that unfortunate events in the past have affected the minds of our people, so as to seriously impair, if not destroy, your ability to serve them in the sacred things of the Church.” Pendleton regrets the necessity of writing this letter, and he assures Keep that the Consistory still wishes to support Keep in anyway it can.
