Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Eldred Edward Iungerich, 1933-11-08
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Eldred Edward Iungerich in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton has received Iungerich’s letters of Oct. 21st and 27th. Pendleton has never heard of a pastor delegating the authority to perform the betrothal ceremony to a layman, and he does not advise doing so. In cases where a greater interval is not possible between ceremonies, he recommends that the pastor betroth the couple immediately preceding marriage. As per Iungerich’s suggestion, Pendleton read Iungerich’s letter of Oct. 21st aloud to the Consistory. Theo (Pitcairn)’s only comment was that he had been struggling to understand Iungerich’s handwriting. Pendleton comments that had Dr. Acton been present at the Consistory meeting, he likely would have “made certain pointed inquiries as to Theo’s intentions.” Names mentioned: Theodore (Pitcairn), Dr. Acton
