Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Eldred Edward Iungerich, 1929-04-04
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Eldred Edward Iungerich in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton has received Iungerich’s letter of March 21st regarding the supposed “opposition services” held by Vincent Odhner. Two days before the arrival of Iungerich’s letter, Odhner told Pendleton that he had given a doctrinal class at Mr. Harvey Lechner’s house at Lechner’s request. As a member of the Advent Church of Philadelphia, Lechner falls under Odhner’s administration. Pendleton told Odhner he was not prepared to recognize him (Odhner) as a teacher of religion within the Bryn Athyn Society. Although Odhner denies rumors that he has been holding Sunday services, Pendleton believes there is a connection between Odhner’s doctrinal class movement and the dissatisfaction of certain groups in Bryn Athyn. Pendleton tells Iungerich in confidence that Odhner will not be employed as a special teacher next year. He writes, “The reports that I received from Karl and George (especially Karl) concerning his work this year made it utterly impossible to do so. Vincent has brains, and I had hoped that he would develop reliability.” Pendleton did not realize Mrs. Iungerich’s injury would confine her to the hospital for so long. He quotes Uncle Remus saying, “When in an automobile, one does not know what minute will be the next.” Pendleton is glad that things are going well in Pittsburgh, and he regrets the current unrest in Bryn Athyn. Names mentioned: Vincent (C. Odhner), Mr. Harvey Lechner, Karl (Alden?), George (DeCharms?), Mrs. (Elizabeth Simons) Iungerich, “Uncle Remus” (fictional character)
