Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Eldred Edward Iungerich in Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Pendleton discusses the administration of Holy Supper during his recent visit to Pittsburgh for their district Assembly. He agrees with Iungerich that a series of mistakes were made, and Pendleton will consider Iungerich’s suggestions regarding the order and sequence of administration. Pendleton recommends a blue chasuble for Iungerich to wear as a means of distinguishing and honoring the Holy Supper service. Pendleton writes that he generally prefers not to stand with his back to the Word but did so in Pittsburgh “because of chancel conveniences with an assistant.” Pendleton explains his understanding of the relationship between representation and influx: “My view, as you know, is that the influx (in representation) is where the action is,- so in the Holy Supper the Lord is present with the elements where prepared, on the Holy Supper alter. I would not sanctify the elements by turning them to another altar, the significance of which does not have direct relation to the Supper. In the Episcopal Church they bend the knee to the high altar with something of idolatry, as if the Lord was more there and with greater permanence than elsewhere. To my mind, and speaking of course, representatively, the Lord is at the high altar at the opening, and at other points of representation, in accord with what is going forward, as at the reading desk during the lessons, and at the pulpit during the preaching, etc.” Pendleton reports that Mr. Sprissler has written to him in protest of the “baseless rumors” that he has left the Church and asking Pendleton to help correct the “lie”. Pendleton looks forward to hearing about developments in the Pittsburgh society in connection with their new property. Names mentioned: Mr. (Alfred?) Sprissler
