Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Henry Heinrichs in Denver, CO, USA. Pendleton writes to advise Heinrichs on a situation that has arisen in the Denver society regarding the behavior of Mrs. Schroder. He believes her “social aggressions” are disturbing but are probably not grounds for her removal from the Church. Pendleton directs Heinrichs to “speak to her directly, and show her that you not only propose to be but are master of the situation.” Pendleton does not think that a pastor has ever separated a member of his society in the history of the General Church. The Consistory has discussed this possibility, and “the prevailing view was that separation is a governmental function pertaining to the episcopal office.” Pendleton thinks the matter of the powers of a pastor as distinguished from those of a Bishop in this regard should receive further consideration. In the meantime, he hopes Heinrichs will be able to improve relations with Mrs. Schroder.
