Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. John Headsten in Chicago, IL, USA. Pendleton has received Headsten’s letter of March 29th. Pendleton agrees with Headsten that Mr. E.H. Alden is “one of the best of them [Convention]” but that “even he . . . faithfully adopts the Conventional attitude toward the Academy, that is, he, in the usual weak manner, evades the issue raised in my letter by neither affirming or denying. His dodging, to put it mildly, does not command respect, for it is neither manly nor honest to hide behind the worn subterfuge of not having had time for examination.” Pendleton suspects that Alden does not really believe the charges against the Academy but is afraid of losing his standing in Convention by admitting the truth.
