Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Thomas S. Harris, 1925-04-03
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Thomas S. Harris in Halethorpe, MD, USA. Pendleton has received Harris’ letter of March 31st. Pendleton was once in a similar situation where a woman, previously Catholic, came to him hoping to be baptized in secret so that she would not be cut off by her Catholic patrons. Pendleton had replied that while she did not need to advertise her conversion, she should be brave and independent in this matter and make an open confession of her faith by being baptized in front of the whole New Church congregation. Pendleton advises that the young mother to whom Harris refers should “solve her home difficulties frankly and courageously” and not attempt to deceive her husband. With reference to infant baptism, Pendleton recommends the consent of both parents; He writes, “I doubt if the consent of one of the parents would be adequate in case the other forbade the performance of the ceremony, unless there was indeed a legal or an entire separation, and the consenting parent had charge of the child.” Pendleton looks forward to seeing Harris at the upcoming Washington-Baltimore Assembly.
