Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal in Colchester, England. Pendleton has received Gyllenhaal’s letter of April 4th. Pendleton discusses the future ordination of Mr. Tilson into the third degree of the priesthood and whether this will entail the creation of a separate diocese. He knew that there might be some backlash to Tilson’s ordination, but he did not expect it to be so drastic. He explains his decision, writing, “My intention was and is . . . to strike directly at the idea that has come to me from various points in Europe that we are attempting to establish in effect an American Church throughout the world.” Pendleton discusses the upcoming London assembly, at which he hopes to hold several ordinations. The General Church is offering financial travel assistance to all its active ministers, and Pendleton has been authorized to give Gyllenhaal $50 for this purpose.
