Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal in London, England. Pendleton acknowledges Gyllenhaal’s letter of Jan. 19th with enclosed report. Pendleton is pleased that the Colchester society is determined to go forward with their affairs by their own means. Pendleton has received Mr. Tilson’s letter giving details of Mr. Ottley’s death. Pendleton discusses the baptism of African New Church people who practice polygamy. The Consistory has considered passages from the Writings on the matter, and they concluded that the Church “may allow polygamists a certain association for the sake of instruction, but not baptism.” Pendleton expresses discomfort for past compromises on this issue. Pendleton reports that the recent ministers’ meetings were very successful. Names mentioned: Mr. (R. J.) Tilson, Mr. Ottley, Theodore (Pitcairn), (Twentymen) Mofokeng, Agnes (Gyllenhaal)
