Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton has received Gyllenhaal’s letters of Feb. 8th, Feb. 22nd, and March 1st. Pendleton is pleased that Miss Enid Cockerell is interested in coming to study in Bryn Athyn, and he discusses the requirements for awarding full and working scholarships. Pendleton offers advice on starting up a New Church school in the Durban Society. The Church is currently short on teachers and cannot send anyone to South Africa at this time. Pendleton is sorry that Gyllenhaal has been sick since returning from Basutoland, but he looks forward to reading Gyllenhaal’s report of this trip. Pendleton discusses the War and its effects in Bryn Athyn; There has been a “wonderful stirring of patriotism” in the country, and 16 or 18 boys from Bryn Athyn have already enlisted. Pendleton is glad that his letter about the Glanville bequest has helped clarify the situation; He did not know that there were such misunderstandings about it in Durban and London. Gyllenhaal’s letter to Mr. Prince will be submitted for publication in the Life. In Bryn Athyn, they are busy making arrangements for the upcoming ministers’ meetings. Names mentioned: Miss Enid Cockerell, Vida Gyllenhaal, Mr. and Mrs. Braby, Mr. R. J. Tilson, Mr. Odhner, Mr. Prince, Mr. L. G. Pemberton
