Identifier: RG.004.01

Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton has received Gyllenhaal’s letters of Oct. 28th, Nov. 13th, and Nov. 23rd. In response to questions about the Glanville bequest, Pendleton encloses answers obtained from Bishop W. F. Pendleton’s records. The Academy believes it was Miss Glanville’s intention that the money be used to support an Academy school in England, not to support Mr. Tilson, although he was the head of the New Church school in England at the time the bequest was made. Pendleton reports that they are in the process of preparing extracts from Gyllenhaal’s reports of his trips to Basutoland for publication in the New Church Life; Pendleton congratulates Gyllenhaal on his handling of the “perplexing phases” of the work in Basutoland. Pendleton thanks Gyllenhaal for his expression of confidence in Pendleton as Bishop of the General Church. Names mentioned: W.F. Pendleton, Mr. Braby, Miss Caroline Glanville, (Robert) Tilson, Mr. Pitcairn, (Andrew) Czerny, Mr. Bostock
