Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal, 1916-09-14
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Gyllenhaal in Durban, Natal, South Africa. Pendleton has received Gyllenhaal’s letter of May 30th but has still not received a report of his trip to Basutoland; Pendleton requests this report. Pendleton would like to confirm that Gyllenhaal received Pendleton’s letter of July 12th along with the $150 forwarded by Mr. Alden for travel expenses to Basutoland. Pendleton has received Mr. and Mrs. Braby’s membership applications, and the Church has sent them certificates of membership. Pendleton discusses the history of the Glanville bequest which was given to the Academy to support a New Church school in England; Rev. Tilson has accused the Academy of obtaining the bequest by “sharp practices.” Pendleton reports on the successful missionary trip of Theodore Pitcairn and Karl Alden in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. In Bryn Athyn, they have had to postpone opening the schools to meet the requirements of the State Board of Heath after an outbreak of Infantile Paralysis. Construction of the Cathedral is progressing steadily; They expect to have a dedication in the next two years, and Pendleton hopes Gyllenhaal will be able to attend. Names mentioned: Mr. Alden, Mr. and Mrs. Braby, Mr. (Robert) Tilson, Mr. (Andrew) Czerny, (William) Benade, Theodore Pitcairn, Karl Alden
