Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Willis L. Gladish in Chicago, IL, USA. Pendleton discusses his thoughts on how the General Church ought to teach about sex outside of marriage. Pendleton writes that he has always considered any sexual relations outside of a conjugial relationship to be “an irregularity and an offense to good morals, and therefore, to be classed as an evil, save and except in certain peculiar conditions and circumstances the motive is such that the apparent evil is excusable.” Pendleton reports that in the early days of the Church, some saw extramarital sexual relations as neither good nor evil, but Pendleton disagreed. On the other hand, he has always affirmed the doctrine taught in the second half of the work Conjugial Love but believes the current atmosphere may be too charged with scandal around it to speak about it in depth publicly. Names mentioned: Mr. Odhner, Mr. Schreck, (Emanual) Swedenborg
