Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Ernst Deltenre, 1914-07-02
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Ernst Deltenre in Brussels, Belgium. Signed for N.D. Pendleton by Freda Pendleton.
Pendleton has received Deltenre’s letter of June 12th; Pendleton hopes Deltenre’s doctor is right and he will indeed be able to begin walking again by mid-July. Pendleton learned from the Portland Journal that Rev. Charles Nusbaum has accepted a call to Mauritius and will stay for a year before returning to Portland. Pendleton does not think there will be a permanent settlement in Mauritius until they are able to send one of their own to be educated for the ministry. At the recent Council of the Clergy meetings, Mr. (Eldred) Iungerich gave a “revolutionary” paper on the Commandments, arguing from Swedenborg’s words in the Adversaria “that the Commandments as we know them were not written upon the tablets placed in the Ark.” Pendleton tells Deltenre that he (Pendleton) has now been advanced to the position of Assistant Bishop of the General Church and elected President of the Academy by the Corporation. An interesting question came up during this process of whether the laymen or the clergy had the right to choose the Assistant Bishop. Pendleton ends the letter by reporting that his son Willard is entirely recovered from the scarlet fever, and by sending regards to Mrs. Deltenre and the children.
