Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. George DeCharms, 1930-07-19
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. George DeCharms in Ashokan, NY, USA. Care of Mr. Raymond Pitcairn. Original enclosures: Letter to Bishop Pendleton from Theodore Pitcairn dated June 30th, 1930 and Bishop Pendleton’s reply dated July 19th, 1930. Pendleton writes that he has been placed in a difficult position by Theodore Pitcairn’s request that Pendleton chose whether he returns to work in Bryn Athyn or not. Pendleton feels that if he tells Pitcairn to return, it will be an endorsement of Pitcairn’s right to propagandize Mr. Pfeiffer’s ideas. But if he tells Pitcairn to remain in South Africa, it will appear as if he is removing a pastor because of a difference of doctrinal opinion. Pendleton thinks it may be best to insist that Pitcairn choose for himself. Pendleton has asked Mr. Whitehead to preach on July 27th, and Pendleton himself plans to preach on August 3rd.
