Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Hendrik W. Boef, 1929-03-08
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Hendrik W. Boef in Los Angeles, CA, USA. Pendleton is pleased to hear that Boef’s health has been improving. Pendleton has been working in cooperation with the pastors of the Bryn Athyn Society on the liturgy, and he would appreciate any suggestions that Boef may have. Discussing confirmation, Pendleton writes that it is not necessary for Church membership, especially if one was baptized as a rational and responsible adult. Pendleton tells Boef that the financial support of a minister is typically the responsibility of his Society, although in certain cases, the Church will give additional support if this is not adequate. The Church holds that the decision of a minister to marry is a personal one, and the financial responsibility is his alone. Pendleton states that he is unsure of how to advise Boef in the case of marriage, especially because of Boef’s health, but he recommends mature consideration of the matter. Although ministers typically serve three years in the first degree, Pendleton would like to ordain Boef into the second degree after one year of service because he serves the Los Angeles Society independently. In Bryn Athyn, the mid-year meetings were successful. After some controversy, it was decided that the new assembly hall for the 1930 Assembly will be built by both the Academy and the Bryn Athyn Society, with shared use by both organizations.
