Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gerrit Barger, 1917-08-16
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gerrit Barger in the Hague, Holland. Pendleton acknowledges Barger’s letter of July 9th; Pendleton encloses the authorization that Barger has requested. This authorization names Barger as an official representative of the General Church and authorizes him to deliver public lectures and lead Divine worship. Pendleton will give Mr. Odhner Barger’s letter to New Church Life. Pendleton believes that the work of developing the interior doctrines of the Church and expounding on the internal sense belongs to the priesthood, but he also thinks that “an intelligent and educated layman who has a burning zeal for the Church should be allowed. . . to labor for the upbuilding of the Church by propagating its doctrines.” Pendleton notes the work of the young man Barger has mentioned, and he asks Barger to convey his congratulations to this man for all he has done for the Church.
