Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström, 1936-04-07
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton acknowledges receipt of Baeckstrom’s last letter. The resignation of Mr. Smart is a disappointment; Pendleton believe his illness must have caused the reversal of his attitude towards the Church. Pendleton discusses what should be done in the matter of the Swedish law which requires a society to have an appointed “principal.” In America, the custom is to recognize the priest as the governor and give laymen judgment over financial matters. In Baeckstrom’s situation, it appears the principal must be either a pastor or a layman, and that Baeckstrom now holds that position. Pendleton is unsure of the requirements of a Swedish “principal,” and thus does not wish to advise Baeckstrom to make a law that the pastor is ex-officio the “principal.” Pendleton is distressed to hear of Baeckstrom’s heart troubles; He does not know what the Church in Sweden would do without Baeckstrom. Pendleton is encouraged by the new concerning Oslo, and he will be glad to see Baeckstrom’s son Harry.
