Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton has received Baeckstrom’s letter of Oct. 30th. Pendleton hopes that Baeckstrom’s trip to Copenhagen will not alarm their Conference Church friends. Conference has cut off the General Church from Mr. Anderson in Spain by turning him against the General Church, but Pendleton hopes Baeckstrom will continue to travel wherever he feels called in service of the Church. Both the Academy and the General Church are suffering financially from the Great Depression. Efforts have been made to reduce expenses in every way possible, but they are still exceeding their income. Pendleton thinks that recovery will be slow, but he believes that someday the world will be better off because of the depression; He writes, “If we may regard the depression as a natural temptation, then, like other temptations, when the use has been served, the state will change.”
