Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström, 1925-02-16
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton acknowledges Baeckstrom’s letter of Jan. 8th. Pendleton reports that Tore (Loven) is entering more fully into the Academy social life and that he is an upstanding boy with a bright future. Baeckstrom’s assessment of the affair in the “other” society (i.e. Convention?) confirms for Pendleton that the General Church is on the right path; He writes, “So-called liberal methods are for a time alluring when they give promise of a speedy growth . . . The Academy has demonstrated that slow growth accompanied by a strong protective policy wins out every time in the long run.” In Bryn Athyn, the February ministers’ meetings were successful and intellectually stimulating. The Academy has decided to send Miss Sigrid Odhner to Sweden for a year to copy letters for the Church. In June, Pendleton will depart on a two-month trip to visit General Church members in Rio de Janeiro, accompanied by Mr. (Eldred?) Iungerich who speaks Portuguese. While there, Pendleton will ordain 3 men who have been authorized to do ministerial work for the past several years. Mrs. (Beatrice) Pendleton does not wish to join Pendleton on his trip to South America, but she would very much like to come on his next trip to Norway and Sweden.
