Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton acknowledges Baeckstrom’s letter of Dec. 10th. Pendleton is glad to hear of Baeckstrom’s missionary success with lectures and book sales, but he writes that if the work becomes too much for Baeckstrom, it is more important to focus on building up permanent church centers. Pendleton will take the matter of financial aid to the Extension Committee. Pendleton has read a translation of the article on the latter half of Conjugial Love to which Baeckstrom referred in his last letter, and also an article by Mr. Bronniche. Pendleton believes the latter half of Conjugial Love is a delicate matter, and while the truth should be defended, it should only be talked about publicly if absolutely necessary. Pendleton discusses the General Church’s stance on the matter; “The ground upon which our Church stands is one of simple and direct acceptance of the doctrine in question as stated.” The Church has no official interpretation, although church members have published their own interpretations in the past. Pendleton personally believes that “extra-conjugial relations are . . . not legitimate in the strict sense, but the milder state of these relations, as they approximate more nearly to that which is conjugial, are in certain cases to be condones and treated as excusatory.” Theodore Pitcairn has departed for Basutoland, and Mr. Gyllenhaal is visiting England to report on the state of the Church there after the death of Rev. Andrew Czerny. Pendleton would like to send Gyllenhaal more permanently to England, but he does not know who would then relace Gyllenhaal in Durban. Mrs. Frost has passed away. Pendleton expects her son, Francis (Frost), will enter theological school next year along with Harold Pitcairn. Pendleton is pleased with Mr. Svensson, but the theological student from Basutoland does not know very much church doctrine. Pendleton sends best wishes to Mrs. Baeckstrom, Miss Nordenskiold, Miss Centervall, and Miss Liden.
