Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström, 1917-11-22
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton acknowledges Baeckstrom’s letter of Sept. 12. Pendleton discusses the state of Mr. (Alfred) Stroh; Stroh’s mental state has steadily improved from the effects of his illness, but his spiritual state is uncertain. At times he becomes “infected with doubt”, but he still wishes to be thought of as a New Churchman. Pendleton hopes Stroh will return to his old self with time, but Pendleton’s efforts to help have only met with partial success. Pendleton writes, “it is quite important for you to realize that you cannot rely on him now as a Church leader, for it must be admitted that his present state is not a positive force or the upbuilding of the Church.” The Church will continue to employ Stroh to finish phototyping Swedenborg’s manuscripts, but it is unclear what will happen when this is done. Pendleton would like Baeckstrom to keep these comments about Stroh confidential. Pendleton sends greetings to Mrs. Elenora Doyer, Miss Malmgren, and Miss Cnattingius, and welcomes them as members of the General Church. Miss (Senta) Centervall is now employed as both a student and teacher in the Academy.
