Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström, 1917-08-25
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Gustaf Baeckström in Stockholm, Sweden. Pendleton acknowledges Baeckstrom’s letters of May 24th and June 9th; Pendleton finds the evidence of progress in Baeckstrom’s report gratifying. With this letter, Pendleton’s encloses authorization for Baeckstrom to administer Holy Supper and perform the marriage ceremony. Ideally, Baeckstrom would have been ordained into the 2nd degree of the priesthood before performing these ceremonies, but the war is making an ordination impossible at this time. Baeckstrom has nearly completed the normal 3 years of service in the first degree, and so Pendleton has decided to grant him special authorization; “We do not believe in ordination by letter, but a grant of temporary powers may be given by rescript, as in the present case.” Baeckstrom should continue to wear his white stole during this time, but he will be given a blue stole when he is ordained into the second degree. Nearly all the young men in Bryn Athyn have volunteered to the army, and the rest have been drafted. Pendleton hopes all will return safely. Names mentioned: Mr. Alden, Mr. Rosenqvist, Mr. Bronniche
