Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Karl R. Alden, 1920-01-26
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Karl R. Alden in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Pendleton has consulted Mr. (Charles) Doering and Mr. (Fred) Finkeldey about the complaint made against the school. The charges are true, but Pendleton feels that the matter may have been exaggerated. They cannot entirely stop students from swearing and smoking. Pendleton admits that a few of the older boys may have acquired some hard ciders, but does not believe the matter is too serious; "If an occasional drinking of hard cider may be characterized as drunkeness, we must admit the charge, though as you will recognize, the word implies much more than the facts warrant." Alden's paper on instructing young ministers sounds very interesting. Pendleton would like to talk to Alden about this paper, as Pendleton is currently teaching a class on practical problems in church government. Pendleton is happy that Alden finds his work in the Advent Chruch encouraging.
