Scope and Contents
The Great Square in the Old City shows the houses of wealthy merchants of the Middle Age with their shops inthe first floor. By law, none of hte exteriors of the houses can be changed, so this is how Swedenborg saw them. (At left is a city pump). This is also called Blood Bath Square, becasue Christian II of Denmark, to ensure his conquest and hold on Sweden, held a banquet in the nearby palace for all the heads of the noble families and after it was over they were taken out one by one and executed. Some hold that Christian's mother-in-law and a traitorous Swedish bishop were responsible for the massacre and this seems possible because Swedenborg tells that King Christian is in heaven.
