Letter to David McCandless, 1864 January 15
Scope and Contents
Original and one typed copy. Written in Philadelphia. Happy that McCandless is satisfied with "the purchase." States that Mr. Burnham's inquiry is to confirm the identity of 'B' [note: author of possible letter published in The Messenger?] is and that he had reads the article that it was based on for his answers. Communicating with him directly will lead to no good and any response he has should be through The Messenger. "The fact is - Mr. B is a subject of Mr T.W. - If I may suggest a reply to him - it will be simply to refer him to the Article - or ... to advise a consultation with his brother Dr B or with Mr H. They can give him all the "aid" he may need." Helen's stay at Waltham will be useful to her as she is "observing and teachable and cannot fail to derive ... benefit from ... good influences." Benade's own plans and condition is still undecided but enjoying a "lull in the storm" that he fears will not remain in permanence. The Anti-Worcester matter moves along and Benade wishes to confide himself to short articles in The Messenger. Mr. W seems inclined to ignore opposition to his views and Benade wishes to see how long that lasts. People and places mentioned: Mr. Burnham, 'B', Mr. 'T.W.', Dr. 'B', Mr. 'H', Mr. 'W', Mrs McCandless & the boys
