Letter to David McCandless, 1852 September 8
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter and one typed copy (pg 1 = photocopy; pg 2 original copy of typed). Written in Philadelphia. Has returned home from his trip and conveys his experiences and opinion of Louisville, Cincinnati and Cleveland. Relates in detail a comparitive allusion of The Falls (Niagra?) to The Word ("...As this flows down over the rocks of natural truth, ... a bright, clear & transparent green, such as is the truth in its first reception") which leads into an examination of Divine work in the spirit of man. Has found the Society in New York to be in a chaotic state with no Minister since "they cannot find one to suit them". People and places mentioned: Louisville, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Mr. Young, The Falls, Mr. Scammon from Chicago, Ms. Samson Reed of Boston, New York, Mr. De Charms, Mr. Ford, Mr. Hawkins, Mrs. McCandless, Messrs Higbey & Henderson
