Letter to Julius Ludewig Koethen, 1884 November 3

 Item
Identifier: Item 574

Scope and Contents

Original and two typed copies. Written in Philadelphia. Incorrectly addressed to I.Ludewig Koethen. Obliged to Koethen for sending a detailed statement of the current attitude of the Pittsburgh Society to the General Church of Pennsylvania. Fails to see how the Society would have been committed to an approval of the New Constitution by appointing delegated to the regular annual meeting of the General Church. The nature of this issue is that the vote of the representatives of the Society in favor of the new Constitution "estopped that Society from objecting to it". Explains in great detail the view that the position of the Society within the General Church would preclude it from having the right to bring anything up for discussion or vote - and that it's representatives did not have the authority to propose or vote for constitutional changes. If the Society as a wholewishes to convince the Council of the General Church that it should propose certain changes, the arguments should be made. But the former chose not to do this and the latter only has the opinion of certain members of the Society. Discusses the possible consequences of the new Constitution as "part of a series of deliberate and determined efforst to injure, &, if possible, to break up the General Church [sic]." Answers twelve questions/objections of Koethen for the current Constitution. Encourages the Pittsburgh Society to first reconstruct itself "to come into a more intimate & solid union with the other members of the General Church."
