Letter to Julius Ludewig Koethen, 1882 September 22

 Item
Identifier: Item 573

Scope and Contents

Original and two typed copies. Written in Philadelphia. Incorrectly addressed to I.L. Koethen. Has received Koethen's last letter and found that he is investigating questions of New Church Doctrine underlying the external organization of the Church. "If we go to the Doctrine for instruction & guidance, we shall not remain far apart in our views of true Order." Discusses thinking of a congregation or society as existing in a State but not a State itself (since that would eliminate the thought of a congregation as a Church.) Ecclestiastical and state affairs need to be kept seperate and explains further what aspects are unique to themselves. "In general - the end or use of the Church is the spiritual good of man, and the end or use of the civil body is the natural good of man." [ Letter noted as incomplete at the end. ]
