Scope and Contents

Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli in Wyoming, Ohio, USA. Two copies, one on General Church of the New Jerusalem letterhead. Pendleton has received several letters from Waelchli along with a report of his recent episcopal trips. Pendleton remarks that the Petersen matter is of “more than passing interest,” and he hopes Waelchli will encourage Petersen. Pendleton has spoken to Bishop DeCharms regarding the letter from Mr. Alden’s brother. He asked DeCharms to instruct Alden that “… if such an inquiry should be addressed to the Bishop of the General Church, he would reply . . . that the General Church was free to go wherever it was called, and that we would, of course, not deny the like liberty to the Convention.” He continues, “My own feeling, (which I am scarcely free to publicly express) is that wherever we seem to be doing good work and getting ahead, the Convention leaders take it as a call for them to head us off, if possible.” Pendleton believes it was Convention who prompted Conference leaders to cut the General Church off in Spain. For now, Mr. Alden will speak with his brother, and they will let the matter rest. Olivia, Waelchli’s daughter, has informed Pendelton that she is departing for Wyoming, OH tonight to visit her sick mother. Pendleton writes their hearts are with Waelchli. Names mentioned: Mr. (Adolph Christian?) Petersen, Benjamin Leighton, Mr. Alden, Bishop (George) DeCharms, Olivia (Waelchli Childs)
