Letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli, 1928
Scope and Contents
Typed letter from N.D. Pendleton to Rev. Fred E. Waelchli in Wyoming, Ohio, USA. Undated, likely written in either October or November 1928. Pendleton has received Waelchli’s last 5 letters with reports of his visits to Los Angeles, Portland, and Spokane. He thinks Waelchli’s advice to Boef not to attempt a sermon every Sunday is wise as they do not want to overwork him and strain his health. Boef wrote to Pendleton requesting special authorization to administer the Holy Supper to the Los Angeles group. Pendleton believes this would be out of order, but he hopes to ordain Boef into the second degree soon. Pendleton has heard of difficulties between Miss Lorenz and Miss Burnham in the past. “However,” he writes, “in all such cases I can not but believe that the fundamental difficulty arises from the fact that the girls, to a greater or less degree, resist the dormitory discipline. Some of them have been accustomed to do much as they pleased, and you know what this means.” Pendleton also acknowledges the problem of gambling but is not overly concerned. He comments, “Our parents are not pietistic, and if they were, yet their children would at times run into indulgences of one kind or another.” Pendleton suspects Waelchli will be thankful to be home after his summer trip to Europe followed by a long visit to the west. Names mentioned: Henry Boef, Mr. (Frederick?) Bundsen, Mrs. (Elia Erminetrude?) Bundsen, Mr. (Edward H.?) Nutter, Mr. (Leonard G.?) Jordan, Miss (Rosalie?)
