Scope and Contents

The Sentinels of the Republic material (found in the Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn Papers) is partly comprised of advertisements for the organization, which come in the form of articles, pamphlets, and booklets. Of the 150+ articles, the majority are written by Raymond Pitcairn and discuss topics such as taxes and recent Congressional actions through the ideological lens of the organization. The rest of the articles are written by news outlets such as the Chicago Daily Tribune, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and others, and they report on Sentinel activities such as the Pink Slip campaign.

In contrast, the pamphlets and booklets are split between the Sentinels of the Republic and the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. The former contains articles written by Pitcairn and tear-off pink slips intended for the reader to attach to their tax returns in protest. The pamphlets of the latter outline the association’s initiative and request membership and/or financial support.

Correspondence, the other significant portion of this material, includes letters—typed and handwritten—and telegrams. These letters, which number sixty, discuss Sentinel activities and wider political events, request newspaper clippings, give thanks for financial contributions and accommodations, and provide updates. The nature of these letters is widespread—some are more personal, while others are addressed to the United States President. This is also the case for the telegrams. Some report arrival times and reservations, while others were sent to members of government, requesting defense of the pink slip provision or discussing Prohibition politics.

Other items include photographs and memoranda from the Sentinels of the Republic exhibit in Philadelphia, the script from the Sentinels’ cartoon “The Amateur Fire Brigade,” newspaper clippings about child labor legislation and Prohibition, petitions of the United States government concerning the pink slip provision, and some anti-Prohibition sheet music.
