Handwritten letter from Willis N. Tuller* in Columbus, Ohio to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. 3 pages, double-sided. “Law Office of Chas. E. Burr, Jr.” letterhead.

Contents: -letter of April 23rd received -brother’s (Malcom Tuller) broken engagement with Miss Emma; new engagement to Dora Corson -uncertainty on the “wine question”: wine today different from wine in Swedenborg’s time; perhaps it is alright if the wine is pure; opinion of chemists and scientists is that wine is harmful to stomach & therefore entire system -place / role of religion: Swedenborg says man’s highest use is to fulfill the duties of his office; Is it sinful when men neglect their business by focusing too much on religion?; Dr. Cowley takes ridiculous positions on W.R. (women’s rights?) & politics; Tuller believes it is best not to discuss religious views in situations where it will do no good -sorry to have missed Gertrude’s birthday; wishes it were possible to visit Phila. without letting his family know; feeling nostalgic for the past -wishes they could both attend May Festival in Cincinnati; court schedule too busy -Tuller dreading marriage; feels ignorant & unprepared; doing best to progress towards true manhood; will Gertie teach him about things necessary to happiness in these matters?
