Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Walter C. Childs in Pittsburgh, PA to John Pitcairn, Jr. “W. C. C.” crested letterhead. Handwriting difficult to decipher.

Contents: -friend Wilson King, consul at Bremen, departed yesterday after summer vacation; invites Pitcairn & Benade to stop over in Bremen; convenient stop near to Holland -Pitcairn’s mother quite ill with bronchitis; Alec & Dr. Cowley say she is recovering and may be out of bed in a week -Pendleton called to Chicago; stayed with Childs en route from Phila. -Hibbard has been infesting Pendleton with “idiotic prudential bosh”; says one family left Church because they couldn’t worship under minister who smoked; Pendleton thinks Hibbard creates a sphere of “babyism” by not his congregation to think for themselves -will the Bishop (Chancellor) write to Hibbard & set him straight?; he fears “injuring his usefulness” with Old Church people, but this will injure his usefulness as an Academy councilor -Carter joined Church -Dr. Cowley had 3rd daughter last week; now has 3 boys & 3 girls -meetings with artist at Caldwell’s who is designing Academy medal / badge; changes to temple of wisdom & eagle in tree; will send Pitcairn copy of new design when finished -Pendelton found 5 Swedish copies of Swedenborg’s dreams at used book store in Chicago -will begin reading class soon; Father Vetterling not enthusiastic about it, but can be convinced to take charge
