Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1876
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D. C. to his daughter, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. Addressed to “Darling Baby.” Dated “Sunday afternoon.” Filed under 1876. Starkey has just finished a letter to Pauline and is now writing to Gertrude, telling her to take some medicine. Miss Solter has “ensconced” herself upon Mamma. She is “a good enough girl,” though boring and rather tedious, but Starkey is not ready to forgive her for leaving the old country again. She wrote to Mrs. H. (Hatch) to see if she could board with them for a while and was rejected, and so Starkey thinks he must have a strange family to have such waifs floating around them all the time. He teases Gertrude about not being able to find any desirable young men in Vineland and makes some joking suggestions. He is glad she is “getting an appetite for things belonging to the masculine mind,” and he knows the Lord will provide a means for appeasing that appetite in good time. He is glad Gertude and George have been growing closer- a positive result of Pauline’s absence, as Pauline and George were “so bound up in each other.” He has reached n. 100 today in his daily reading of Heaven and Hell and will be glad to hear Gertude’s questions. He won’t make it home on Thanksgiving day, so Mamma has said they will celebrate when he is at home this week. He will get lunch in Wnton. (Washington?) and expects to be at 1626 by Friday night. He inquires whether Gertude will be ready to go home with him, and he sends his kind regards to Mr. and Miss Peirsol. Names mentioned: Pauline (Pauline Starkey Wells, Miss Solter, Mrs. H. (Mrs. Hatch), Emma, Mr. Wright, Mr. Knight, Mr. Peirsol, Mr. Pendleton (W. F. Pendleton), Kellogg, George (George G. Starkey), Miss Peirsol Places mentioned: Vineland, “1626”, Wnton. (Washington?)
