Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to daughter, 1876-01-12
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D. C. to his daughter. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Addressed "Dear Girl," possibly referring to Cara Starkey Glenn. Starkey’s daughter spoke of using up her funds in her last letter, and Mamma has also run out. She will have $10 once her older brother signs the enclosed P.O. order. Starkey is glad she is building up her wardrobe with a hat, coat, etc. He supposes she can’t do much with her music while there is so much housework to be done, but he hopes she will have a better chance soon. He is glad his New Year’s letter brought her comfort. Addressing her spiritual concerns, he writes, “You have very little to do with the question of how much you are doing of the truths you know. First you are yet a veritable Baby in spiritual stature. Second, others take care of that. You have only to move on, knowing that all the heavens & the Lord Himself are on your side to help. When you try to obey any truth, you are going to the Lord in the way which He likes best.” He thanks her for her photograph, and he encloses two more cards for her. He asks her to tell Dora that he has not forgotten that he owes her a letter. He sends his love to the rest of the children and hopes they might write him a medley letter. Names mentioned: Dan (possibly Daniel Taber Starkey?), Dora (Theodora Starkey Smith)
