Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1876-03-09
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D. C. to his daughter, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Today, Starkey has been writing a letter to Pauline to remind her of her birthday. He remarks, “Isn’t it funny that she wants to come home?” He will send her (Pauline) money for the return journey (from California) once he knows how much it will cost. In Washington, there is a severe epidemic of “Tyler’s grip” (influenza), which very few have escaped. He would like to know how Gertrude is feeling now and what made her “get such a turn” on Sunday; Perhaps it was epizooty. When Starkey gets to Vineland, none of them will dare be sick. He hopes her cough is better and he warns her to protect her feet when she goes out. The New Church folks are having a “pound party” tomorrow evening, which he will tell her about if he decides to go.” Names mentioned: Pauline (Pauline Starkey Wells) Places mentioned: V. (Vineland)
