Letter from George G. Starkey to Dr. George R. Starkey, 1876-01-23
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from George G. Starkey in Vineland, N. J. to his father, Dr. George R. Starkey. Decorative “S” stamped top center of the first page. Letter badly faded in places. George writes that his mother returned home last Thursday to her country residence in Vineland after a prolonged visit with old friends in the City of Brotherly Love. He confidentially notes the rumor that she had been an inmate of a “Institute for the Insane.” He reports that she returned home “sane & logical,” joyfully welcomed by her children and servant (Annie F.). Unfortunately, she took a cold and became ill, compelled to remain inactive by severe pain in her left side. Dr. Malcolm Tuller diagnosed her with inflation of the pericardium and gave her medicine which lessens, but does not remove, the pain. Mother requests some medicine from G. R. Starkey for Ned’s swollen salivary gland. Gertie is doing well, but longs for young society. Dora is not going to school now, and so Carrie must “keep up the school going reputation of the Starkey House.” Of all the classes he is taking (algebra, Latin, philosophy, grammar, reading, spelling), George likes Latin best and has been translating mythology. He is “a little low in health with Dyspep.” which he thinks may be the result of too much bran bread. On the reverse of the last page are several caricature sketches of various men, some with captions. Names mentioned: Annie F. (or T. ?), Dr. Malcom Tuller, Ned (Edward Starkey), Dr. Tuller Sr., Gertie (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn), Dora (Theodora Starkey Smith), Carrie (Cara Starkey Glenn) Places mentioned: Vineland, City of Brotherly Love (Philadelphia), Starkey House
