Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn in Philadelphia to her father, Dr. George R. Starkey. “S” seal pressed into upper lefthand corner. Gertrude updates her father on household news. Mrs. Peirsol felt it was impossible to live in a house where it was evident she was not wanted by one of the members. Miss Mary is so sick she can scarcely take care of herself, and Miss Martha cannot leave Mrs. Knight, so Auntie Peirsol has come to stay with the Starkeys. She requires little attention now as she is able to move around the house, and Gertrude has been given sole charge of her. Mother had a pleasant visit in the country, though she still doesn’t seem very bright. Gertrude had a pleasant evening last night with Mrs. Knipe at the Orpheus Concert. She stayed over and went to Church with her; Gertrude does not like the Old Church. Fan and Dan Parkhurst were baptized today, and she is sorry to have missed the service. It has been cold in Philadelphia, though many residents seem to be enjoying the outdoors anyway. Paule found some arbutus but doesn’t think there will be much this year. Gertrude asks Starkey to send her love to Miss Driver. Mother, Miss Preston, and Auntie P. are all lying down, the children are out, and the kitten is asleep at her side- She feels rather lonely and wishes Starkey were there. Names mentioned: Annie Hall, Mrs. Peirsol / Auntie P., Miss Mary, Miss Martha, Mrs. Knight (?), Mrs. Knipe, Fan Parkhurst, Dan Parkhurst, Paule (Pauline Starkey Wells), Miss Driver, Miss Preston Places mentioned: Philadelphia
