Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Caira Skelton Starkey, 1875
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D.C. to his wife, Caira Skelton Starkey. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Dated “Wednes 29 1875” Starkey has received Caira’s letter and is worried about the state of her “distressed shipwrecked body.” He hopes it is only the result of extreme exhaustion, and that her vigor will return after a few days “free from care” at the home of their friends. If Caira has no objection, he thinks Dora and Cara should accept the invitation to Mrs. Tilden’s on Friday, though he doesn’t suppose they have appropriate dresses. He has received a very satisfactory letter from the R. R. folks. They have had poor weather, and Starkey thinks George won’t have a sunny time at Mr. Kent’s. He supposes Dr. F. has given Caira laurocerasus which “ought to relieve thee of those naughty feelings.” He asks her to send a postal every day until she gets better. He is pleased by the news regarding Aunty P., noting “She’s been playing ‘Possum!” He adds that poor Mrs. Kempton of ‘Tooky had a stroke, and that the Hatch’s are having a Christmas tree for Lasier’s children. Names mentioned: Dora (Theodore Starkey Smith), Cara (Cara Starkey Glenn), Mrs. Tilden, Geo (Geroge G. Starkey), Mr. Kent (?) Dr. F., Aunty P.
