Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Caira Skelton Starkey, 1875-05-20
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D.C. to his wife, Caira Skelton Starkey. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Starkey has just received Gertrude’s and Pauline’s letters and was glad to find Caira in good health. Starkey has been sick all week and decided to go to bed last night instead of attending the social meeting at the Donaldson’s as he had promised. Two nights ago, he attended a discourse by Mr. Giles in the new temple where he ran into the Dr. and Warm (?) Guernsey, who “put her bottom close beside me.” Rev. Sewell is staying with the Hatches for a day or two on a “begging expedition.” Starkey comments that Thedea’s (?) prospect “brightens (fourth time) next month”, and he asks Caira to tell Pauline there is no set date for her departure to California. He is glad Caira had such a good time with Aunt Marse, and he hopes Marse’s sister is behaving. He plans to make a call on Hocking’s (?) daughter. Names mentioned: Gertrude (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn), Pauline (Pauline Starkey Wells), the Donaldsons, Mr. Giles, Warm (?) Guernsey, Dr. (Dr. Hatch?), Rev. (Frank?) Sewell, the Hatchs, Thedea (short for Theodora?), Aunt Marse, Hocking (?) Places mentioned: Phila (Philadelphia), Cal. (California)
