Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Caira Skelton Starkey, 1875-12-16
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D.C. to his wife, Caira Skelton Starkey. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Dated “Thurs. 16th 1875.” Starkey has just heard from Gertrude’s letter of Caira’s bad fortune in Philadelphia, and his heart aches for her as he knows she must have gone home crushed. He writes that no one will know the difference by next Christmas, and besides, “for a hundred times that amount, thee wouldn’t exchange places with the scamp who took it.” There is no point dwelling on it and disturbing the children’s peace of mind. The Aunties seem so earnest about hosting the family for Christmas, that Starkey will consent unless Caira objects. Mrs. Swanson started her journey South this morning- all the Dr.’s folks were charmed with her. Starkey sends a kiss and love to all and “10 cents to soothe they pocket.” Names mentioned: Gertrude (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn), Mrs. Swanson, Dr. (Dr. Hatch?) Places mentioned: Phila (Philadelphia)
