Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn , 1875-04-25
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D.C. to his daughter, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. Oval seal pressed into upper lefthand corner. Starkey writes Gertude a birthday letter while getting some much-needed rest on a bright and cool Sunday. He believes she has just entered the most eventful year of her life to date. Having received her first holy Communion, she is now “being initiated into new & most important experiences in life.” The good and truth which the Lord has been storing up in Gertrude’s interior mind for her entire life are about to germinate, infusing their life into the lower externals of her being as they grow. There are “Herods” within the self that try to stop this growth, and so these “precious creatures” must be protected by “going down into Egypt,” i.e., by giving “quiet attention to doing one’s daily duties.” Starkey also speaks to the significance of the 20th year; 20 is twice 10, and 10 signifies remains, which are “every good & truth which the Lord insinuates into man from infancy even to the last period of life.” Gertrude should read Arcana number 2280 to learn more about remains. Gertude should “expect to be called upon to fight more sharp battles than ever before,” but this is only because she is “being properly armed to make the battles successful ones.” Names mentioned: Herod Places mentioned: Zion, Jerusalem, Egypt
