Letter from Dr. George R. Starkey to Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, 1875-03-16
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Dr. George R. Starkey in Washington, D.C. to his daughter, Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn. “G. R. Starkey, M. D.” letterhead. Starkey received Gerturde’s letter and was very gratified to learn of the family’s solicitude for his burdens. He thinks this is a tough season for most, and he hasn’t come this far just to give up. He informs Gertrude that he expects one of his patients, a schoolgirl on her way to Eden Hall, to accompany him on Friday and take supper with the family. If he collects what he is expecting, he should be able to pay Miss C’s bill this week. He encloses some money with this letter as the check he sent yesterday did not go through; There must have been some mistake, because D. wrote that his account was overdrawn. Starkey and the Hatchs found the photograph quite satisfactory. To “indulge [Gertrude’s] vanity,” Starkey comments, “How charming is this day after Nature has so long presented her ruggedest side to us!” He is as anxious as Gertrude to have Mamma go to the Center and hopes to convince her to “go feeling comfortable about it.” Signed, “your obt. servt.” Names mentioned: “Miss C,” “D.,” the Hatche’s Places mentioned: Eden Hall, “the Center” Signed, “your obt. servt.” Names mentioned: “Miss C,” “D.,” the Hatche’s Places mentioned: Eden Hall, “the Center”
