Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells to Caira Skelton Starkey, 1875-08-15

Identifier: Sub-Series 1

Scope and Contents

Handwritten letter from Pauline "Paulie" Starkey Wells in Woodside, Ca to her mother, Caira Skelton Starkey. Paulie misses her life at home and would like to be kept updated on what everyone is up to. Letters from home take so long to reach her that she feels out of touch with current events by the time they arrive. She wishes the children could be with her in California, and she asks her mother to send all the religious teaching she can as it “will be more welcome than you have any idea of.” She tells her not to worry about Davie; They have fun together, but none that anybody could object to. She is feeling much stronger than when she left home. Everyone liked their gifts, and they are all very kind to her. Uncle Robert treats her almost as affectionately as he treats Addie, and he wants to get George out for a visit as well. She inquires after Dora and asks her mother to give Carrie a birthday present on her behalf. She sends “oceans of love” and asks her to tell Ned he is the only one who hasn’t written to her. Names mentioned: Geroge (George G. Starkey), Gertie (Gertrude Starkey Pitcairn, Davie, Uncle Robert (Robert Tripp?), Addie (Adeline Tripp?), the Jr.’s (?), Dora (Theodora Starkey Smith), Carrie (Cara Starkey Glenn), Ned (Edward Starkey) Places mentioned: San Mateo
