Letter from Pauline Starkey Wells to George G. Starkey, 1875-03-19
Scope and Contents
Handwritten letter from Pauline "Paulie" Starkey Wells in Woodside, Ca to her brother, "Dear old Georgie Boy." Although the letter is dated 1875, context clues indicate it was very almost certainly written in 1876. Paulie received a letter from their father yesterday instructing her to figure out how much the travel home will cost. He will send the money, and she may return home at the first opportunity. Uncle Robert will find out the information tomorrow in ‘Frisco. She doesn’t know exactly when Mrs. Wright will depart, but she has agreed to take Paulie east with her. They have been having lovely weather in California, and the girls will soon start riding horses again. The skies are blue, the orchards and wildflowers are blooming, and Paulie believes she is the happiest girl in the world. White has left the ranch and is waiting down at the boarding house until Bixby returns. Aunt Em wants to go to Pescadero again before Paulie leaves, and they will go if the roads are good enough. Paulie sends “unbounded love” to all at home. Names mentioned: Addie (Adeline Tripp?), Uncle Robert (Robert Tripp?), Mrs. Wright, White, Bixby, Aunt Em (Emeline Skelton Tripp?) Places mentioned: ‘Frisco (San Francisco?), Pescadero
